This is it!!! Home Stretch!!!
In 1952 Florence Chadwick, the record setting first woman to swim the English Channel both directions, attempted to swim the 26 miles between Catalina Island and the California coastline. Flanked by boats to watch for sharks or help in case of injury she swam for 15 hours before a thick fog rolled in. For another hour she swam before asking to be pulled out. As she sat in the boat, she found out she had stopped swimming just one mile away from her destination.
Two months later she tried again. The same thick fog set in but this time she kept swimming. When asked she said that her first failure occurred from not being able to see her goal. The second time she said that she kept a mental image of the shoreline in her mind while she swam.
